Maanshan foundry plant to improve maintenance with COSWIN

2009-06-03

The foundry, 100% owned by the world's largest manufacturer of ductile iron pipes Saint-Gobain Pipelines, is the third factory to come online with COSWIN Maintenance Management System at the group's manufacturing base located in Maanshan city, Anhui province, China. The foundry started operation in 2004, producing iron fittings of nominal diameter from 80 mm to 300 mm, with a capacity of 8000 tons per year. The plant employs 350 staff.

On June 3, 2009, a joint Saint-Gobain and Siveco team uploaded the plant's technical database to the system, covering over 800 systems and machines, with all related maintenance information (structures, documentation, preventive maintenance plans, spare parts lists). The entire asset base of the company in Maanshan, representing a capital investment of over 100 millions Euros and more than 1,400 employees, is now managed using COSWIN.

The cooperation between Saint-Gobain Pipelines and Siveco China started in late 2006, during the construction of the company's iron-making plant. Siveco was hired to build the plant technical database and to ensure that failures were systematically recorded from the commissioning phase. In 2008, a central maintenance management team was setup to support all Saint-Gobain plants in Maanshan and a modernization project was launched in the main plant, producing iron pipes. As part of this project, COSWIN was rolled out in less than 2 months, during the busy start-up period, to support a more reliability-focused maintenance approach. The foundry, now also using COSWIN, is using it to further improve its productivity: by enforcing a systematic recording of failures and work done, a historical database is being built, enabling optimal management decisions based on technical-financial analysis, for example decisions as to the job frequency, design changes, suppliers change etc.
